Educational Workshops and Counseling Services

Unison offers a variety of educational workshops and counseling services to assist individuals and families in resolving their housing-related issues and to help them understand the responsibilities of tenancy and homeownership. Our certified housing counselors work in collaboration with clients to thoroughly review their individual situation and design an action plan for successful homeownership. Housing counseling services are provided in both English and Spanish.

Home Ownership Services

First Time Homebuyers Education Workshops

Free Homeownership Education Workshops are open to anyone interested in learning about the home buying process, regardless of income. Workshops cover the home buying process from start to finish, from “Can I afford to buy a house?” to “I just got the keys!” Unison’s Homebuyer Education classes are Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) approved and fulfill most lenders’ Homebuyer Education requirement. Upon completion of this class a Certification of completion is issued.

Homeownership Counseling

Provided to first-time homebuyers who have attended Unison’s Homeownership Education Workshop. One-on-one housing counseling provides tailored sessions to fit your individual needs. This includes counseling for personal credit issues, money management and budgeting, as well as an in-depth look at the debt to income ratios used to qualify you for your first home.

Online Homebuyer Education Course

In addition to in-person workshops, Unison offers an online course that meets the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) requirements. Once the course is completed there will be a follow up phone call prior to receiving the certificate of completion. In order to take the class online, please follow this procedure:

  • Register for the class
  • Costs $99 for the borrower and $50 for each additional coborrower (a discount code is emailed to coborrower once borrower registers with a coborrower)
  • Take and complete the online education; you need to complete all of the modules
  • You will be sent an email you with a scheduled appointment to complete the follow-up questionnaire

Foreclosure Prevention

These free workshops and one-on-one counseling opportunities help homeowners who are facing financial difficulties make their mortgage payments. Our certified housing counselors work with homeowners to avoid foreclosure by developing a short-term intervention plan to negotiate a solution with the lender, along with a long-term plan to stabilize the client’s housing needs. Clients are encouraged to participate in a Foreclosure Prevention workshop before seeing a housing counselor in a one-on-one meeting.

Other Workshops

Back to Work

A second chance at homeownership for previous homeowners who have lost their home through short sale, deed in lieu, bankruptcy or foreclosure. Through one-on-one counseling that covers personal credit issues, money management and budgeting, prospective homebuyers will be guided through the steps to overcome this event and reduce the likelihood of reoccurrence. Once completed, prospective homebuyers will receive a Certification Letter to help them purchase again.

Rent and Utilities Assistance

Unison provides financial assistance to Adams County residents who need help paying for their utilities. In order to receive utility assistance, residents must participate in the Rent and Utility Assistance/Education Workshop. Our housing counselors will help you prepare a budget and will advocate on your behalf with landlords, mortgage companies or the public utility company.
